A client of mine brought me his Dimension E520 Dell Desktop to have a look at, mainly because he couldn't be bothered fighting his way through the English-as-a-second-language helpdesk that Dell runs(from India). My client bought this machine in May last year. 14 months later it is dead.
Symptoms: Flashing amber light at the front. According to Dell's online docs this means an internal power problem; either the mainboard or the power supply is dead. Googling the issue reveals numerous people with the same issue.
I have ordered a new power supply. If that fixes it I'll let you know. If not it is a write-off, with their proprietary mainboard.
Which brings me to a pet peeve: why is it that the big name brands insist on using proprietary innards for their PCs? It is the bane of my life as a techie!
